Ground Source Heat Pumps Why choose Ground Source Heat Pumps?

A typical Ground Source Heat Pump system installed at the Suffolk Yacht Harbour, Levington, Suffolk.

Ground Source Heat Pumps
A Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHP) uses pipes buried in the ground to absorb energy from the earth to heat your property. It is ideal if you have a larger garden or plot of land in which to bury the pipes.

Key benefits of Ground Source Heat Pumps
  • They can reduce your energy consumption for heating and hot water by up to 80%
  • Because the earth beneath the ground remains at a fairly constant temperature, a GSHP will provide a consistent flow of energy throughout the year
  • The noise level is low
  • Easy to operate and low maintenance
  • Ground source heat pumps can be linked to your radiators, but are ideally placed to work with underfloor heating, which doesn’t require such high temperatures and is therefore energy saving

The technology
A GSHP circulates a mixture of water and glycol through plastic piping buried in the ground, where it absorbs heat from the earth. This heat passes through a heat exchanger and into the heat pump where it converts into higher temperatures capable of heating your home.

It should be noted that heat pumps will only work efficiently if your property is well-insulated and draught-proofed. Pipes do not need a permit and installation depth is around 20cm below the frost line. The length of pipe depends on the size of the property to be heated.

Ground source heat pumps are more complex to install because they require boreholes and trenches. If you are interested in ground source, please give us a call to go through the options.
